Creekview nips WHS in overtime

The Creekview boys soccer team is growing up and finding success on the pitch.

Heading into Tuesday's game against LaFayette, the Grizzlies (4-0-0) were undefeated and had already scored more goals in four games than they had the entire 2007 season.

"Creekview continues to mature and develop its program without the guidance of a senior class," head coach Shawn McClellan said. "Douglas Resendiz, one of the few juniors on the team, has been irreplaceable as our captain. He epitomizes our philosophy of big team and little me."

Creekview continued its winning streak with a 4-3 overtime victory against Woodstock last Wednesday.

Tied 3-all in overtime, Justin Whitaker scored the game-winner on a cross from Jordan McClellan for the winner.

Woodstock, playing a man-down because of a red card, scored a goal and had an own goal as the game was tied 1-1 at the intermission.

The Grizzlies, who outshot the Wolverines (1-4) 19-10, were led by Josh Leitch, who scored a goal and had a penalty kick in the second half. His first goal was on an assist from Jeffrey Hunter, and the penalty kick was a result of a takedown in the box that earned a red card.

Defenders Ryan Nielsen and Denis McNamara were solid in slowing down the Wolverines' offensive attack in the second half.

Three goals were the most allowed this season by the Grizzlies.
